3 Reasons Why I Live In And Love LoHi Denver, CO

When I moved from New York, I didn’t want to lose my urban roots, so I automatically gravitated to a NY Style loft located in the Highlands area of Denver, CO. in a small neighborhood called LoHi. I just really appreciate an open-air floor plan with high ceilings, exposed duct work, and brick. A true city feel. The real estate in Highlands has been consistently appreciating since I moved to the neighborhood in 2009.

There was literally no retail when I moved here then. A run-down Kung-Fu Studio was where one of the best bars in the world is now, Williams &Graham, a renowned speakeasy serving specialty cocktails in a prohibition-era atmosphere with a secret entrance and alley exit.

The multi-family developers have landed here in a huge way. Dickinson Plaza on 32nd Avenue, which housed the Laughing Latte Coffee Shop, Fat Jacks’s Super Subs, and 420 Friendly Pizza joint Mary Jane’s, is gone. The cranes are up, The Plaza is dusty and a five-story apartment building is going up.

There is not a parcel in Highlands that is available it seems, as developers are literally tearing down city blocks, replacing them with multi-family apartment buildings, retail on the 1st level, and cashing in on the #1 economy in the Nation.  This is great in my opinion for the neighborhood, in that Denver is truly becoming a Metropolis, with the walkability in this neighborhood a 100%

LINGER LOHI
  1. WALKABILITY – Forget having to own a car. Seriously. You don’t need one. Everything is within walking distance.  Bars, Restaurants, Little Man Ice Cream, Avanti., and Linger to name a few. Buy a Bike…you’re welcome. Denver has a really great bike system, and you can quickly hop on the bike path right near REI, which will take you all throughout Denver, as far as the Cherry Creek Reservoir. Just Pedal.
SMALL BUSINESS LOHI
  1. SMALL BUSINESS – Kick rocks Wal-Mart. You are not welcome here. Small business rules these neighborhoods, and buying local and supporting small business is very encouraged and supported here. There are a few organizations you can be a part of right away. Once being, HUNI, which is a local small business-based organization that holds monthly meetups and does a lot within the community.
OHANA LOHI
  1. FOODIE PARADISE – Denver has rocked the map becoming a destination foodie city, constantly trying to outdo itself. Walk to amazing POKE food at Ohana Kitchen, RAMEN at the famous UNCLE, artisan pizza at Bar-DOUGH, a world-class steak at OLD-MAJOR, or a fun-filled, entertaining dinner at THERE. Whatever you are craving, I assure you it is here. What you should do right away is become a part of Denver Passport, which is a discounted 2-for-1 for various bars and restaurants throughout the city. Check it out, you will save hundreds.

In closing, there is much more I left out for you to explore yourself. This is a thriving neighborhood that is spilling out into other neighborhoods as well, in terms of having small businesses, and amazing food and drink, all within walking distance of where you live. Other neighborhoods outside of LoHi that offer the same vibe and feel are Sloan’s Lake, Sunnyside, Berkeley, Tennyson, Globeville, and RINO. All within 5 minutes of LOHI which is zip code 80211.
